Behind the design: The story of the Rove Wooden Chair by Jörg Boner
Explore the creative mind of Jörg Boner, the designer behind the Rove Wooden Chair. In this short yet insightful video, Boner shares the story behind one of his most technically advanced and expressive designs.
Innovation through collaboration
The Rove Wooden Chair is the result of deep collaboration between Jörg Boner’s Zurich-based studio and the manufacturing team. Long before the first sketch, the process began with conversations around how to improve construction methods and comfort. This led to technical innovation, rethinking conventional chair-making and developing new ways of working with plywood. Jörg Boner’s drive to both understand and challenge production methods is evident throughout the chair’s development.
A modern interpretation of the wooden chair
The Rove Chair is defined by surfaces rather than visible framing, with its seat and backrest each crafted from a single curved shell of 12mm plywood. These sculptural components form both the visual identity and the structural core of the chair, resulting in a lightweight yet strong design. Its thin profile and minimalist form allow it to support rather than dominate a space, giving presence to the person seated. With subtle flexibility in the backrest for added comfort and a warm, tactile material palette, the Rove Chair brings quiet expression to modern interiors – balancing personality, functionality, and sustainability.
